Your article is very informative, thank you. However that’s exactly why I bought the iTouch because I wanted a slimline camera replacement in which I figure the Apple would be perfect. The video is fine but a .7 megapixel is horrible. Like you said…for a daily life document…its still perfect…but for someone who wants to store 10,000 or more photos and transfer them…its horrible.
Taking it back to Best Buy tomorrow….very disappointed. You did make it clear though, for what people it would fit just perfect.

Quality of built in cameras for portable gadgets are not as good as actual cameras. However, if a person does not mind the picture quality and as long as it can still be viewed, they are ok with the built-in cameras. Photography buffs are of course cannot be satisfied with the cameras on mobile phones, iPod Touch and other devices. In the end, it really boils down to the person and their preferences.

Before the iPod Touch 4G was released,i expected the camera quality to be just like the iPhone 4G’s camera,i’m disappointed,but i’m still going to buy it,its going to be my first apple product that i buy.
I too am not overly impressed with the quality of the 4G’s camera yet I am still going to buy it. It has other features that, all combined, create an extremely interesting piece of kit. If people are looking for a device with a good quality camera, get a dedicated compact/ SLR, as the camera on this has mainly been added to facilitate your social life, nothing else. This will be my first apple product that I buy and I can’t wait.
Fantastic collection of photos– on several grounds. First, it’s the best sample photos site I’ve found. I have an IPT 2G and was considering the 4G, but was very put off by the .7 megapixels.
Second, you provided excellent contrasting shots showing the effects of the low light control (it’d be good to rearrange the photos so that they are next to each other, left to right–that’s the easiest way to see what difference such a control made).
Third, you have a good photographer’s eye (plus lots of good stuff to work with!).
